Why do Catholics call the Priest ‘Father’?

In the Catholic Church, the title “Father” is used to address priests as a sign of respect and honor. This practice is based on Jesus’ own words in the Gospel of Matthew, where he instructs his disciples: “Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven” (Matthew 23:9).

While this verse may seem to discourage the use of the title “Father,” it is important to understand it in its proper context. Jesus was criticizing the Pharisees for seeking titles and honors for themselves, rather than humbly serving others. The title “Father” used for priests in the Catholic Church is not meant to elevate them to a level of divine authority, but rather to acknowledge their spiritual role as spiritual fathers and shepherds of the faithful.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that the title “Father” given to priests is a sign of their spiritual paternity and their role in the Church’s mission. It states, “The priesthood of the New Covenant is inseparably united to the mission of Christ. It provides a participation in his mission… Priests exercise their ministry above all in the Eucharistic liturgy” (CCC 1589).

By calling priests “Father,” the faithful recognize their role as spiritual fathers who guide, teach, and care for the spiritual well-being of the Church. It is a way of acknowledging their authority, leadership, and the unique sacramental ministry they have received.

It is important to remember that the title “Father” used for priests is distinct from the title “Father” used to refer to God. The title “Father” when used for priests is a relational title, while when used for God, it signifies the divine paternity and the source of all fatherhood.

Overall, the use of the title “Father” for priests in the Catholic Church is a longstanding tradition that reflects the spiritual role and authority they hold within the Church.
